Hi. I just loaded the new Bitdefender Total Security 2019 and it automatically excludes this file - /private/tmp/com/bitdefender.dmg from scanning - what is this file and why is it automatically placed on the Exceptions list?

Hello myt_afrodyt,

The path com.bitdefender.dmg is used by Bitdefender while scanning dmg. files and it is  excluded by default. You should do absolutely nothing about this. This file is used by Bitdefender. It may disappear when it's not used and reappear when it's used. This is an automatic mechanism and it you shouldn't be concerned about it.
