Updating, Menu bar, Scanner display at startup

I'm transitioning from the Sophos free home version; that is my experience. Sorry for so basic questions.
- I googled but did not work - How do I (can I) put BD in the upper menu bar? And related...
- I have set to scan at computer startup. The dialog box stays open and on top. Is there a way to minimize automatically, or if in the menu bar, dialog box would be unnecessary?
- Where can I find the date of last update? I thought I read it updates itself automatically, but...
- I clicked on Update now, and after about 3 minutes of saying "Downloading..." it started downloaded (quickly) giving a date and time of right now, suggesting it did not update automatically.
- Preferences gives no options for this (or much of anything).
