I use both the Brave and Edge browsers. The Brave browser has a VPN icon in the upper right corner, but the Edge browser does not. Are both protected?

VPN disconnects when computer sleeps, while browser open
Using an iMac, running Ventura operating system. Is VPN disconnecting an expected behavior? VPN does restart when I wake computer but it takes a minute. Is this a security issue, because browser is open and VPN is not connected? I have kill switch active.
